I sat with my leg crossed and stirred my coffee, the spoon ringing out.
I knew everyone would be up soon and I looked out over the small kitchen. It wasn’t much but it was all we needed.
Sunshine was streaming in the kitchen window and I got up and placed both hands on the sink and leaned into it. I looked out over the yard, and down at my middle aged hands.
I knew in that moment, that this was the best it got. When our hair was grey and our hands wrinkled the challenges of this new family and this simple house would be what we missed.
Those kids made us laugh everyday, and they cried every bedtime. But I wasn’t ready to miss these days.
