The Nike Air Signature Player was released in 2001. Part of the Alpha Project, the Signature Player was Nike’s second attempt to bring Foamposite technology to the general public. Four years earlier, the Foamposite One had not done as well as Nike had hoped due the $170 price tag and limited availability. By contrast, the Signature Player retailed at $130 making it more affordable for your average consumer.
Ironically, the Signature Player was not a signature shoe at all, and was instead a popular team model in both the NBA and NCAA, releasing in numerous TB colorways. From a performance standpoint, the Signature Player left a lot to be desired. Designed primarily for wing players, the model was well cushioned but heavy and inflexible. The Foamposite upper meant that the shoe was difficult to break in and the fit was extremely tight around the forefoot but lacked sufficient support around the ankle. That being said, the Signature Player was aesthetically one of the more pleasing models of its time.
After 18 years, Nike has yet to retro the Signature Player. With all the hype surrounding Foamposite retros, is it time for Nike to give the Signature Player another look?
