The Dungeon Family Tour (4/24/19)
Last night I was fortunate enough to find myself at the Dungeon Family Tour. This was a show I had no intentions on going to; however, I won a pair of tickets the day before the show giving me the chance to see a handful of hip-hop legends at no cost to me. For those who don’t know, The Dungeon Family consists of acts such as Organized Noize, Goodie Mob, and most notably OutKast who helped put the “dirty south” on the hip-hop map. Last nights show consisted of everyone expect the obvious missing link, André 3000.
The show may have been light in attendance, but this didn’t take away from the high level of energy from both from the Dungeon Family and the crowd. Instead of a typical concert setup where you have opening acts first and the headliner last, everyone was on stage from start to finish for the two-hour set. Even when there was sometimes over ten people on stage at a time, Big Boi was still the main attraction and stood out amongst the rest. The one half of the legendary group performed a handful of OutKast essential well as hits of his own. Outside of Big Boi, the other recognizable names was Cee-Lo and the rest of Goodie Mob. I was mainly there for Big Boi, yet getting to see much of the songs off the criminally underrated 1995 classic, Soul Food lave has definitely given me a new appreciation for an album I already liked so much.
As a whole, this wasn’t the best show I’ve seen, but at the same time, it was still a fun night full of a mixture of hip-hop and funk that had everyone dancing around. With so many members it made for a fast-paced show jumping from song to song whiteout a chance to catch your breath while playing all the dirty south essentials. Big Boi, in particular, was just as impressive as you’d think he’d be, but at the same time it was quite depressing getting to see only one half of the legendary group. Hopefully, in the future, we can get an OutKast reunion tour where I get to see André 3000 and Big Boi together.
