Trams first started running to Westgarth in 1890 when George Clauscen, a German immigrant and former mayor of Fitzroy, founded the Clifton Hill to Northcote & Preston Tram Co. In 1940 the old cable lines were replaced for a while by double-decker buses but in 1956 trams made a comeback! The Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board began running electric models on what was then called Route 88, renamed 87 in '85 and finally 86 in '87. Now they run late all week and all night on weekends, so why worry, just jump on the 86 and jump off at stop 27 near Westgarth Cinema, or jump off at stop 28 and treat yourself to a downhill stroll and one of Melbourne's best views. Westgarth is No.1!
It should be a suburb of it's own but technically it's not. It doesn't have it's own postcode, which it shares with Northcote - 3070. And the City of Darebin, of which it is a part, doesn't even reference it on their website. It gets its name from a train station (which is only two minutes walk from the Tavern) but it's so much more than a name! We're in a Westgarth state of mind!

Oscar Peterson is considered to have been one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. He recorded over 200 albums during his 65 year career, and despite lifelong arthritis, a hip replacement and stroke he kept playing and composing til he kicked it at the age of 82! What an effing legend! Expect to hear some of his compositions, along with jazz standards, classical pieces from the Spanish composers and more, when the Merri Creek Tavern presents A G Trömerud live in the front bar, 4:30, today.
Handsome manager Rory McDougal pouring our latest beer - @templebrewing Okinawa Sour Blonde Ale. Clean, refreshing and zesty with flavours of lemon rind and a grippy fruit tartness (yep, that’s what I said), drinking this beer is like being slapped in the face with a palm full of lemony goodness! Come down and drink some... OR ELSE!
