Back when I was in high school, Frida was kinda my thing. I would play her in Spanish class projects and assignments (there’s a video lurking out there somewhere). .
But in all honesty, I have to admit that most of this obsession was rooted in one fascination: her unibrow. And the fact that she painted it and shared it and unabashedly emphasized it. Frankly, as an insecure 17 year old, it was rather unbelievable. Even if I didn’t realize what it truly meant.
Tonight, I got to see her up close. I got to dive into her paintings, 10 years older, 10 years wiser, and stand witness to what made her HER. .
Because it was never really about the unibrow (or the mustache, or the monkey) - it was the fact that she personally branded herself before branding was cool. .
She was recognizable. She was daring. She was honest. And she was an artist in every sense of her life. (Plus, she was obsessed with wearing a plethora of large silver rings on each and every finger and I’m all for it.)
So yeah, Frida’s back. And this time, I’m actually listening. .
