Free Solo is an awesome movie, highly recommend! Any movie set in Yosemite would be baseline good just because of the scenery but following the story of how Alex Honnold trains for the climb, especially the mental side of it, was completely fascinating. I was definitely having a hard time wrapping my head around what I was seeing, it just defies comprehension. Very inspiring flick!
My 2018 has been dominated by the release of @freesolofilm - it’s been an incredible whirlwind to tour around and support the film and I’ve been humbled by how the film’s been received. But I’m starting to really look forward to a new year of climbing adventures...ready for new challenges... Happy new year, everyone! I hope it’s full of adventure. @jimmy_chin pic. #freesolo#yosemite#alexhonnold

The woo-hoo-OMG moment when I met climber extraordinaire Alex Honnold, star of the newly-Oscar nominated documentary Free Solo. The film documents his attempt to become the first person to scale Yosemite’s 3000 foot high and almost vertical El Capitan rock without ropes — a possibly crazy and certainly death-defying endeavour. Seeing it at BFI IMAX, Britain’s biggest screen, was edge-of-seat exhilarating but I urge you to catch this film wherever you can. It’s sooo good — fascinating and insightful. And Alex Honnold is that rare kind of human - a true hero. An edifying evening indeed.
Stunningly exhilarating film following free solo climber @AlexHonnold

#freesolo !!! What an epic doco! Must watch. I needed my chalk bag for my sweaty palms. Watched at village cinema thanks to @findyourfeet who got a couple local climbers in to talk about rock climbing life.
Then off to @societysalamanca for some Gin tastings with @jessericson1 @taylordave Yum
Alex Honnold (@alexhonnold) standing high above Yosemite Valley, USA where on 3 June 2017 he carried out the monumental ropeless ascent of Freerider up El Capitan.
The intricate process that led to this groundbreaking ascent was documented in Free Solo, the film directed by Jimmy Chin (@jimmy_chin) and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi that has now been nominated for an Oscar Award 2019.
This is possibly only the third time that a climbing or mountaineering film has been considered for the Oscars after - coincidentally - Mike Hoover's 1973 film Solo and Kevin MacDonald’s Touching the Void, which made it into the 15-strong shortlist.
The winners will be announced during the 91st Academy Awards ceremony scheduled to take place on 24 February. LINK IN BIO #freesolo#freesolofilm#oscars2019#elcapitan#freerider#alexhonnold#rockclimbing
Remembering the time I visited Yosemite and stood in awe as I was told there were people climbing this giant slab of Granite. I couldn’t even see them until a nice lady let be view them through her telescope. Now I need to see Free Solo the documentary of Alex Honnold’s free solo accent up ElCapitan. #elcapitan#alexhonnold#freesolo#outdoors#yosimitenationalpark#life
Professional rock climber Alex Honnold attempts to conquer the first free solo climb of famed El Capitan's 900-meter vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park.
This Oscar®-nominated film is now playing at the Sie!
“It’s not so much that I don’t let myself get intimidated. The thing about climbing is that there’s never any time pressure and there’s no obligation to go and climb anything straight away. So if it seems really scary you can just practise, you can train more and you can work towards it and then only do something when it feels comfortable and natural." “I think what makes free soloing so interesting to the non-climbing public is that it’s so easily understandable and yet so outside of the normal world. People understand that if you fall you die and it’s totally natural to wonder about that kind of thing. I can see for the non-climber it seems totally insane, but the thing is, having been in the climbing world for 12 years and focused my entire life around climbing, to me it all makes a lot more sense. Climbing without a rope on big walls and by myself, it all sort of fits within this greater context of climbing and it’s natural.”
Last year, OM Editor @will_renwick_ got to hang out at a climbing wall with the one and only Alex Honnold. You can read their full exchange on our site now. Link in bio.
“Your goal is to stay balanced. It should feel 5.8, and you should feel balanced at the top. If you get adrenalized and you let that emotion guide your day, you’re going to over grip somewhere, you’re not going to be paying attention to what you need to pay attention to, which is this next move. But when you’re adrenalized psyche, you can get dangerous. And I don’t like the dangerous thing
Everybody makes mistakes, everybody gets a little adrenalized and decides to go for it.
But I follow my instincts. When my instincts say ‘get out’ I get out, walk away. When they say ‘alright, move on, everything’s cool’ I’ll move on, everything’s cool. You don’t stop driving your car because someone almost hit you”
-Mike Reardon (vid playlist in profile)
Mike didn’t like the dangerous thing. Neither do I. If you get in that adrenalized psyche, you need to sit down and have a long conversation with yourself to contemplate what horrible life decisions brought you to this juncture. #ChurchOfReardon#LifeWithoutLimits
BTW: I’m using some of my own photos for this series rather than Mike’s. Not to spray, but because I don’t want to be another one of those shit pages what survives from shamelessly stealing other people’s fucking work.
I steal other people’s work *with* shame, thank you very much....
It’s cold and dark so go and sit in the warm and dark under the glow of the silver screen.
The Oscars and Awards season seem to continuously make a mess of things but more on that later. Here’s 8 films in cinemas now that are well worth the money and time:
An Impossible Love (dir. Catherine Corsini)
Exploration of a woman’s changing, tough and complex relationships with her lover and daughter over a life time. Beautifully written, acted and directed.
Hale County This Morning, This Evening (dir. RaMell Ross)
Poetic, non-linear depiction of life and soul in Hale County, Alabama.
Monsters and Men (dir. Reinaldo Marcus Green)
A look at police shootings and their consequences from three different perspectives in one neighbourhood.
The Favourite (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)
Punky period drama lesbian black comedy. Three masterful performances. Cinematography 👌
Free Solo (dir. Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi)
Holy shit. Alex Honnold is as interesting as his obsession with free solo climbing. Wholly cinematic stuff.
Stan & Ollie (dir. Jon S. Baird)
A lovely, warming film with four superb performances.
One Cut of the Dead (dir. Shin’ichirô Ueda)
Hilarious low budget silly Japanese zombie comedy. Funnier than Shaun of the Dead.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (dir. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman)
Mind-bending, spectacular and a whole lotta fun.
