Devils Elbow on the Murray River. Devils Elbow was named because it was such a difficult piece of navigation for paddlesteamers. These distinctive cliffs are located on the Murray River about 30 km upstream of the SA border. Sturt on 26 January 1830 reported that on examination of these cliffs both he and Fraser 'had well nigh been buried under a mass of cliff that suddenly became detached'. Raven-Hart in about 1947 described these cliffs as 'Neopolitan ice-cream horizontal strata' (photo 2). This is also a memorable spot for modern-day river travellers. Opposite the cliffs with a large sandy beach ideal for camping. Photo 3: Two men in a small rowboat at Devils Elbow on the Murray River c1910, State Library of South Australia, PRG 1258/2/2388. Further information about rowing and paddling journeys on the rivers of the Murray-Darling Basin is available in "Murray-Darling Journeys", link in bio.
This turned out to be a very fun day shooting! I set out with a plan of getting some heavy storm shots, it looked more like a washing machine than anything else so I decided to try my luck down in the water and see if I couldn’t get a more in your face kinda shot.. setup with the tripod I don’t recall hearing the shutter release before having to rip my gear into the air a second before being smashed full force by this wave, to my surprise the shot turned out alright!
