Feeling very lonely at the moment. Which makes sense given that I've spent most of my time over the past few days alone in my house. I do WANT to go out, meet people, catch up with friends and do things. But I have very little money and not a lot of friends who live nearby. And those who do are busy, understandably. I get nervous asking people to catch up, because I worry that they don't really like me, they're just nice to me because they're nice people, and if I message someone I could be annoying them.
And yes I think I'd like to meet new people, but that also scares me.
I don't want to go out for food because I have to perform in a few days and I feel fat and unfit. And I can't find the energy to be exercising as much as I think I need to be doing.

I'll be okay, I know none of this is a major problem. I just feel like I'm standing behind one of those one-way mirrors they have in police stations, watching people pass. I can see through to the other side, but no one can see me or acknowledge me.

Friendly reminder NOT to #lightitupblue this #autismawarenessmonth! Listen to those who actually have autism.
Also a friendly reminder that #autismspeaks have had a campaign where the mum of an autistic child talks about how she wanted to commit suicide when her child got the diagnosis. Supportive? Nah.
A third friendly reminder that lighting it up blue further withholds the prejudice that only boys are autistic. While it’s true that most autist ppl are male, this thought have led to less help & research for women & girls with autism.
The fourth friendly reminder is that u should go & drink some water, eat something & take ur meds & then if u can u can donate money to some other organisation than @autismspeaks.

My five-year-old "differently-wired" daughter has been really into art her whole life really. Today we did our own version of a paint night. She was the facilitator, and I would copy everything that she drew, to her specifications. After each rendition, she would comment on how she observed that things can be drawn in more than one different way. "Wow, the sun can be drawn like that, and the sun can be drawn differently like that!", "That's how you draw a hill? This is how I draw a hill", "Now I know that grass can be drawn in different ways!", and, "you drew your bird like that, and I drew my birds bigger!" There were no judgments like that's good or better or bad. It was simply her observations, and beautiful quality time. ❤️ #thepossibilitesareendless #fiveyearoldartteacher #create #differentnotless #neurodiversity #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptance #differentlywired #tinyartist #redinstead #lightitupblue #presumecompetence #artteachersofinstagram #bornartist #create #kids #consciousparenting #nojudgement

Hear Sunny Cefaratti, TMA Co-Founder, share her thoughts on Autism Acceptance Month. She writes: “Please listen what I have to say about celebrating the gifts of autistic individuals. In the video, I talk about the fact that every person on the spectrum has a gift, including those people who are non-speaking. They DO have gifts. They just need support to find them.” At The Musical Autist, we’re proud to celebrate and support people on the spectrum through our music programs. 🎵 Watch the rest of Sunny’s video on our FB or website!

In June this little miracle will be five. If you told the day she was born we’d be here with a smiley, her mommas attitude and love for queso defier of odds. I would of told you knew, I have faith, but the reality is I was so scared the easiest thing was to work and work and work til my brain just operated and didn’t think anymore. I love this little girl. I love her mother, she’s my rock, my solitude when I need peace and my better half. #girlswithautism #micropreemiedad #micropreemie #bestsmileever #redinstead #redinsteadofblue #24weekermicropreemie #defiant

hey guys! one of my followers @grimes.games is starting a group chat for people with emotaphobia, which is a form of extreme anxiety surrounding vomiting and being sick. if you think something like that would be beneficial for you then DM them and they'll add you. the number of people in the group will be capped at some point so it's like a first come first serve thing, and i will let you guys know when they've decided to stop adding people 💕

Eye contact stuff is weird.
I either look away the entire time, or I will stare into your eyes for way too long (way too long for non Autistic social norms)

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF EYE CONTACT IS SUPPOSED TO BE?

Actually, I do know what right amount of eye contact is (for non Autistic individuals). How do I know?

Because I studied it.
I first read about “the art of eye contact” in a magazine back in middle school, you know, before everyone could Google everything in 2.5 seconds.
So in case you are wondering, according to Seventeen magazine (why was this available to 12 year olds??), the ideal amount of eye contact is 3-5 seconds for American non Autistic individuals.
The magazine didn’t actually say “American non Autistic”, but I’m just assuming, mostly since I don’t know much about international eye contact rules, and I haven’t met any Autistic people yet who love 3-5 seconds of eye contact.
I had struggled with how long to make eye contact and I had no idea why, until I learned the 3-5 second rule.

YES! I could make appropriate eye contact! Finally!! And now I know you are wondering, “Rachel, what happened next???” I’ll tell you!

I would look into someone’s eyes- and count to 3- like if you had been watching my hands, you would’ve seen them count out- 1, 2, 3. Then I would look away and count to 3, again, using my fingers. Then back at you- 1, 2, 3. And away, 1,2,3.
I did it! I made eye contact! I fit in, blended in, did what everyone else was doing, what I was “supposed” to do.
But guess what? I was so busy counting and focusing on 3-5 seconds, that I had absolutely no idea what anyone was saying to me. My responses were enthusiastic head nods or shakes. I was guessing based on the other person’s face and tone of voice.
Was I listening? Not a chance.
But hey, at least I looked like an expert listener.
That’s the important part right?
I know a lot of Autistic people have “tips and tricks” like this one.

Another one I relied on was “right eye, left eye, forehead, nose”. I would say those in my head as I looked at each of those places on the other person (cont in comments & link in profile)

As a fairly new Mama of diagnosed toddler. I know I still have tons to learn. I feel like I embraced the diagnosis head on. Just because my son now has a “label” of being autistic. It didn’t change anything about him. He’s still the same exact funny, sweet, amazing, and adorable little man he always has been. The only difference is now that we have it, we are able to get more services for him. We attend a weekly autism support group through our early intervention, where the kids play in the room with the therapists, and the parents sit and chat over coffee. I’ve learned SO much in the last few months that I would never know if it wasn’t for that group. A discussion we had a couple weeks ago was about the negative parts of Autism Speaks/light it up blue/ and the puzzle piece. How most members of the adult autistic community and those who truly support them choose to wear #redinstead. I urge you to do your own research. I’m not here to force my opinion on anyone, and like I said, this is a whole new world for me too. I do feel we are past the point of awareness though, and my son is not “missing any pieces” of a puzzle. Stay strong and support and empower each other always 💕❤️♾

Stay strong and support and empower each other always 💕❤️♾ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #diehndesigns #thediehnteam #autismacceptance #autism #goredinstead #redinstead #neurodiversity #acceptance #empower #support #autistictoddler #autismmom #autismsupport #supportautism #proudautismmom #asd #autismawarenessmonth #autismspectrumdisorder #earlyintervention
Day 22: Dispel a myth.
.
There are so many myths about autism. It’s not even funny. “People suffer from autism.” The only thing we “suffer” from is prejudice and discrimination. Especially women on the spectrum. Autism is NOT just a boy’s condition either. Autism Speaks chose blue to represent autism for this very reason, and that’s one reason not to support that horrible “organization”.

I don't know who did this. I wish I knew who did this. I saw it on Tumblr but everyone involved in the post made it clear they didn't do it either.
I know what the Tumblr account I saw it on is, and if you check out as actually an autistic I'll have no problem telling you in DM.

I can't separate these things into paragraphs and my OCD is going to make my head explode over it. 😖

As parents and educators, we sometimes resort to punitive measures when feeling threatened and out of control. When we find ourselves in this place, it is important to recognize this internal reaction to help ground our responses so that we can be the calm in the storm, rather than the fuel to the fire.

It's Autism Acceptance month! ♡
In celebration I thought I'd do something I saw some people in the #actuallyautistic tag taking part in.
So here's 5 autistic traits I like about myself:
♡ hyper-empathy
♡ my vocal stims when i feel safe & relaxed are adorable
♡ experiencing emotions really intensely (this obviously has its downsides, but it makes the good emotions so much more intense as well)
♡ being able to absorb & memorise lots of information
♡ the ability to get absorbed in & compeltely devote myself to something

AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH! ❤️
•
•
•
T: why is it acceptance instead of awareness?
almost everyone is aware that autistic people exist, however, there is still a lack of acceptance for who we are. there is no respect or acceptance for our limitations, our viewpoints, our existence.
how can you be a good ally?
there are plenty of steps you can take, including the following: refusing to support charities that treat autistic people as less than e.g. Autism Speaks and Autism Awareness Australia, listening to and boosting our voices, actively combating the spread of false information about autism, and stop using functioning labels

I thought I should take a moment to explain the meaning behind my symbol and explain that I am about spreading information mostly about issues currently facing the autism spectrum and to advocate for better treatment for those on the spectrum, I believe that it’s important we spread the truth to others so that we can all work together to improve the autism community, I have made a YouTube channel if you’re interested check it out I currently only have one video but it’s talking about Autism Speaks and while some grammatical mistakes were made i hope it still gets the point across
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqH2zkoab_vfSU5STSPWngg

Check it out and either tell others of my insta and YouTube or just take the information I have found and use it to make your own material. Let’s work to make autism’s acceptance more known and respected
