Today we have a training buddy today! @normanthegreathelper He was conditioning to get used to his halti and I was there for my basics.
Ronin and Norman were great today. Ronin was quite excited and distracted because of Norman’s presence. But having another dog train with us is a great opportunity for growth even though he was highly distracted. Norman, being the good boy that he is, was very neutral towards Ronin and occasionally interacted when it was appropriate. Ronin’s heel wasn’t up to his normal, but with the added distracted I’m quite satisfied with how much he was able to focus on me and how well he was able to heel. Even with Norman present, he his sit and down were spot on, quite proud of him. He did have a lot of moments with putting a lot of pressure and tension on his leash, but I expected it and made sure to check on my own patient and remember he’s still learning.
After going to petsmart we went to Starbucks after for some down time. We get approached by people a lot and some sees us all the time. They always ask me why do I sit here with him and then just leave. Main reason why I do it is because Ronin is quite shy when it comes to people. He’s not aggressive or anything, just super cautious towards strangers. And it’s something I want him to get over, just so he can be comfortable when we are around a larger group of people and also different people too. In the beginning of training, Ronin was afraid of every single person that would look at him or walk pass him. Always tense and unsure. Now he can lay down and not pay any attention to people walking by. Yes, he will get up and move closer to me if a person is approaching him aggressively or rushing towards to pet him. He’s really good with people who are calmer and allowing him to sniff first. He will even let them pet him under his neck and if they stay an extra minute or two they can pet his back too. And if you live with us, touch his paws 😂

Been meaning to keep this updated, but at least I keep my notebook updated so I can update here haha.
We didn’t train every day this week, or at least nothing new. Ok I lied, we’ve been working on the command to ‘leave it,’ which is proving to be quite easy since he has a solid foundation of ‘no.’ Anyways, Thursday we had a Petsmart outing and Starbucks right after. Petsmart was quite the distracting day for him, he could no focus on me as much as he usually do, lots of puppies and frankly it’s been awhile since he had outside exposure, so I don’t blame him for being excited. However, once Ronin and I were away from everything, his heel is where it should be and focus was a lot better too. Ronin is still not sure of people, but little by little he lets someone pet him a little bit longer and letting their hands touch more of his body without being afraid. Which is the reason why we choose to sit at Starbucks, show him that people aren’t so bad, and also to show him not everyone is going to say hi to him too. Plus lots of noise and outside exposure really helps with his confidence building. .
Today, I took Ronin to Starbucks early. Grab some tea and just enjoy the nice morning air, and not breathing in 115 degree of hot air. The best of what SoCal has to offer. Ronin wanted to walk around, but I kept him on a short tether and he finally gave in and just laid under my chair as people rush in and out for their morning coffee. One gentlemen we met, Angel, was kind enough to help with Ronin’s training. He was super patient with Ronin and respected his space and wasn’t upset at the fact that he wasn’t jumping into his arms and licking his face. He was able to pet his head towards the end and everyone was somewhat happy.
Later during the day, we went ton Petsmart, tons of puppies and dogs. Training class was starting just we arrived. There was also two amazing pups, didn’t get their name but one was a German shorthair pointer and the other was a whippet. While the owners was checking out at the cash register, Ronin and I kept a good space and worked on being calm and no getting too excited when other dogs are present.
Never had a dog that has this much loose skin. Everyone we ran into all say he will grow into this skin, but idk haha. I don’t mind either way.
Lots of training the past two days, and totally forgot to document them 😶
Sunday (35), we had Auntie Kronda and Brother Fox adventuring with us. First we went to Costco outside food court, and boy can I say, lots of people but Ronin did amazing. Every time we go somewhere new, I like bringing Alphonse. Ronin feeds of his energy a lot more then he does with mine, when Alphonse is present. Alphonse is usually calm and relax in most situations and rarely gets freaked out or scared. Anyways, the boys did amazing, Ronin sat and laid down without me asking, and walked when I walked. I keep thinking it’s all him and it is! But I also have to give credit to all the hours we’ve spend as well. Consistent training does amazing things. After a short Costco lunch, we went to their favorite place for some whipped cream, Starbucks! By the way, it was disgustingly hot Sunday and today, Sunday hitting 98 and today over 100 🥵. Poor Ronin’s paws were burning. We’re thinking about inventing in some shoes once he hits six months, can’t wait for some spider leg videos 😂. .
Monday (36), we did not have any outings but mostly outside training with recall and just bonding. It got too hot for me to function, plus came home from work late too. His food increased a little, I have tomorrow off, so we’ll see how much he is weighing now at petsmart.

The inevitable bloopers while trying to get pictures of Kai are so funny.
Fun fact : he only has a few black spots on the top of his tongue, but the underside of it is almost completely pigmented!
He's working on leash manners and doing well. Training outside is still a process, but with his favorite treats of regular ol' kibbles, he's getting there. Slowly teaching him proper heel position as well. While still a handful at times, he learns stunningly fast! Always so proud of my puppy.
Crazy how it’s been a little over a month with this guy, and there has not been a single day where I get tired of seeing his wrinkly face.
Lots of training today, we did go to puppy play time at petco, but no one else really showed up, Trainer Chelsea said it’s been slow all week. She thinks it’s because of graduation and summer and all. Hopefully we see his friends again before he hits six months. Anyways, since there was no puppy play time, Ronin and I walked around Petco checking out the products and just practiced on heeling and focusing. Ronin was unsure about some purple and blue translucent dog cones, so we kept walking by it to desensitize him from them. Eventually he stopped flinching , after the third cycle, and was easily able to focus on me. We spoke to trainer Chelsea once more, and she complimented how far he’s gotten. Today she was able to pet him head to toe, but when they first met he hid under the chairs and refused to play or interact with other pups. Thanks to a wildly English bulldog puppy, Ronin was distracted enough for her to pet and even when he looked at her, unfazed. Ronin got too distracted at that point and we ended the training session there after getting him some treats to enjoy.
Later on that day, with six naps in between and five play sessions with Brother Fox, us three went to Starbucks. We sat in the front for some human and environmental socialization and exposure. Twelve people walked past us, and a couple sat besides us while there was a table of four coworkers and another table of four celebrating a friend’s birthday. We sat outside for about 30 minutes before leaving due to a semi truck noises and loud banging of workers loading and unloading. Plus the cold got Ronin shivering.

He looks so grown in this picture 😭. He needs to stop !! .
Quite the slow and lazy day for both of us, Alphonse included. Played and napped for majority of the morning and afternoon. When we finally did train we went to petsmart and Starbucks. I forgot some of his treats at home so petsmart training was a bit lackluster for him. He got distracted a lot more and I had to re-distract him back to me and I also gave him more time to sniff and explore. He was cautious of a box by the aquarium area. Decided it was a good thing to desensitize him too. He is weary of moving items like boxes and chairs, anything that makes a screech or strange noises. Spent about 5 to 8 minutes before continuing our way to trying to heel and focus before giving up and going to Starbucks haha. Got him a little cup of whip and we chilled in the front. Two girls came out of Starbucks with a chihuahua in a harness. Ronin kept wanting to play but he actually moved himself to the otherwise of my chair. To my surprise he would glance at the other pup and try to just focus on me. And that’s where I ended our outing at Starbucks while he was going a great job. We did did one last ten minute training at home, don’t worry about 4 hours after our Petsmart/Starbucks outing.

Nice and calm day today. I finally got a day off with my boys and I really took advantage of it by napping haha. Honestly, ever since I decided to nap with Ronin and letting him lay in my lap as I roam the internet or watch my shows, I felt that he and I really have been bonded a lot more. His attention towards me changed, yes he still have his puppy moments but overall I love the focus on this guy. We went to petsmart and this lady came up to us asking about training and what to do with a new puppy. It’s been a while since she had a dog and she’s picking up a rescue pup, 9 weeks, tomorrow and is nervous and excited. We talked for a good bit, Ronin would sniff here and there, but he would turn around and sit next to me, watching me, as I spoke to the lady giving her advise. I rewarded his behavior and gave him some pets for being awesome. After the lady left we continued our way around Petsmart working on heel and focus. I just love training, and getting Ronin just reminded me how much I love it. After Petsmart we headed to his favorite place, Starbucks, we come here too often haha. Some of their regulars sees us a regular now too. An older gentlemen approached us asking about his breed. He was impressed by how calm he is for his age. I’m impressed by it too.

Day 32: Throw back to these floppy ears 😭.
One short 20 minute outing today with cousin @normanthegreathelper to Elliott’s! Lots of new smells and of course nothing but distraction. Did one heel up and down an aisle for about a minute before letting him be a puppy and sniff and learn his new surrounds. He caught some of the attention of other customers curious about his breed. Some because Cousin Norm Norm was the spotlight of the visit with the huge vest too haha. A little girl even asked if Ronin was even a dog lol. Anyways, Ronin did really well socializing with some of the employees there, letting one pet him for a little as he enjoyed his treats. A little cautious but still willing and more open to outside love. He did amazing while we checked out some of the chews for the boys to enjoy while I’m gone. I didn’t even ask or anything but he sat and even laid down while I made my transaction. He watched me intently and had some leash tension today during our outing.
Also he’s a habit weenie when it comes to the cold. Hard to have a training session outside today because he was willing to move from his place mat to the outside bed, back to placemat.

My handsome boy ❤
Kai is ready for another day of, well, even more training.
He has been doing great on training; we're working on walking well on the leash and general obedience outside of house premises as well as strengthening obedience inside. Of course, heavy socialization work is in progress for the little snapping turtle, too.
